Q: What’s an easy to digest, high quality protein powder that you would recommend?
I haven’t discussed protein powders in quite a while, as there is a lot of controversy over many of them and their risks vs. rewards.
If you eat a balanced diet and live a moderately active lifestyle, protein supplementation likely isn’t a concern for you. However, for those who don’t eat consistent meals (like drivers with chaotic schedules) or those don’t eat a lot of meat, a protein supplement can be a great addition to their diet. As we age, protein intake often decreases (as our appetite decreases). Additionally, for those who want to build muscle through strength training, protein supplements can sometimes help.
Whey protein is the most common, but not something I recommend for most people, as it can be inflammatory and difficult to digest. It is sourced from dairy, a food group I don’t encourage people keep in their diet on a daily or very consistent basis.
Instead, I recommend collagen powder, which is sourced from the bones and connective tissue of beef, poultry, and marine animals. It may not sound appealing, but one of the biggest draws is that it’s colourless, flavourless, blends well, and is easy to digest. It has become widely available, and is relatively affordable too. This is a great option for drivers, as it can be mixed into almost anything: smoothies, soups, oats, and more. I recommend opting for a grass-fed beef version, with one favourite brand being Organika. Bonus: many users of collagen protein notice an improvement in skin, nail, and hair growth and texture over time.
For those looking for a vegan alternative, hemp protein is a great option. It’s affordable and easy to digest, something other vegan proteins don’t always offer. Many vegan protein powders cause constipation, but hemp protein tends to avoid this side effect. It creates a creamy texture in smoothies, unlike many vegan types that can be chalky.
As always, research the different options, and see what would best fit your diet, budget, goals, and taste. Once you give something a try, pay attention to your digestion in the first few days of using it to watch for any unpleasant side effects. You can always try a different brand or type if needed!
